Shearing
Sheep & Goat Shearing
Rachel has been shearing since 2006 and is ASI certified. Be sure to call in advance as her spring shearing schedule fills up quickly. Please note for 2013, due to the demands of our farm business, Rachel is limiting shearing jobs to flocks of 25 or less and within 60 miles of Amissville, VA. Thanks for your understanding.
Schedule of Fees:
- Mileage – 50 cents/mile round trip from Amissville, Virginia (can combine jobs to save mileage fee).
- Shearing – $6 per animal with $30 minimum (so 1 sheep will be $30).
- Blade Fee – usually under $10 for most jobs, this covers sharpening expenses and you are only charged for the number of fresh blades needed to shear your animals properly.
- Hoof Trimming – $2 per animal (sheep and goats only).
Shearing Etiquette:
On the day of your scheduled shearing, please make sure your animals are dry and contained in a small catch pen before your shearer arrives. Also, make sure you have a helper available to catch and hand animals to the shearer. Because of the physical demands of shearing, a shearer must not be expected to both catch and shear animals.
